Diamond 3: unit cells

Within the diamond structure to the left a cube is drawn. This represents the so-called "unit cell". A unit cell contains all the information about the structure. The lattice can be generated by stacking unit cells next to each other side-by-side in a regular arrangement in three dimensions.

On the next page we see how stacking the unit cells of diamond produces the bulk structure.
